Also known as “Detroitnitz”, the Reudnitz district in the south-east of Leipzig has a charm all of its own. Dilapidated old buildings with billboards and wild graffiti meet a young bar and pub culture, inspiring cultural offerings and original restaurants. Reudnitz is also becoming increasingly attractive as a place to live. Carefully renovated Wilhelminian-style buildings attract artists, students and young professionals who are drawn to the unconventional area and look behind its rough façade. Find out more about the up-and-coming trendy district and some of its hotspots.
If you want mainstream, you’ve come to the wrong place in Reudnitz. Here, much is still unfinished, imperfect, untouched – and that is precisely what makes it so appealing. You will look in vain for homogeneity without contours, here the focus is still on corners and edges. And that includes both buildings and residents. Disused factory premises serve as artists’ studios, former retail spaces as pop-up restaurants, enchanted park areas as gathering places for underground raves. Let yourself drift, explore the small side streets around Dresdner Straße, Täubchenweg and Riebeckstraße and experience Leipzig at its most authentic.

Reudnitz’s gastronomic scene is also deliciously unpretentious and sets itself apart from the usual restaurant chains. Bar Substanz regularly hosts concerts and culinary events. In summer, it opens the doors to its beautiful beer garden, which is as famous as it is popular for its burger creations. At the lovingly decorated Café Bubu, you can enjoy brunch among vintage furniture at weekends and vegan tartlets on weekdays. And the pop-up restaurant Gastgeber: lives up to its name and lets a different chef take over the pots and pans every two weeks – new menu included.
Cinematic art of a different kind: at the Regina Filmpalast, you can immerse yourself not only in blockbusters, but also in independent films and soft velvet armchairs. The auditoriums are reminiscent of the atmospheric movie theaters of the last century and have little in common with today’s cinema giants. If the popcorn makes you thirsty, you can then take a tour of the hallowed halls of the Sternburg brewery and get to the bottom of its history and brewing processes. Meanwhile, there is plenty of laughter in the Clown Museum, which presents numerous posters, puppets and newspaper articles and supports exciting projects such as “Less smartphone – more imagination”.
The Lene Voigt Park also magically attracts non-Reudnitz residents. The eleven-hectare green space offers numerous sports and leisure facilities such as playgrounds, picnic areas, a football pitch, beach volleyball courts and table tennis tables. In spring and summer, people romp, barbecue and party here – often until after midnight. Want to experience Reudnitz up close?
